Bukowski - A Writers Desk - Saturday Review, Sept/Oct 1985

A rare piece about Bukowski.

Tuli Kupferberg - Outsider Cartoonist

The term "outsider artist" or "outsider musician" refers to someone who's active in art or music, but defies the established convention.

Well, I claim the term "outsider cartoonist" - and I nominate Tuli Kupferberg. He was active in lots of areas - Beat poet, musician (The Fugs), activist, movie actor (kind-of), publisher etc. etc.

Come to think of it, he lived his whole life as an outsider.

Here's one of his cartoons from a 1981 collection "After the Ball Are Ova".

Its interesting to note just how many different publications he submitted his work to - some of his other collections list over 25 publications.

Anyway....this one made me laugh.

Gross cartoon

Spot on....

Hasn't dated one bit.

Hi-Fi Adverts

There's something about adverts for "high-end" audio products that makes me feel uneasy. Rather like an unpleasant farmyard smell.

This ad from 1972 kinda sums it up for me.

Music is important to me, but I'd never own a Bose.

Kliban's Zippy

Kliban wrote the foreword to a couple of books that I'm aware of. This is taken from Bill Griffith's Zippy Stories [pub: Last Gasp] from 1986, although the foreword is dated 1981.

The Zippy character seems to have been very popular in the US and also gained a following in Germany and Spain; the comics' were also translated into Japanese, Dutch and French. I'm surprised at the international appeal as most of the jokes reference US political and popular culture. Perhaps the international versions also translated the references to appeal to local markets?

The artwork is very good and the comic strips that reference or satirise wider-issues are fun to read but the frequent references to (the-then) contemporary American pop-culture make the strips appear dated and limit the appeal to a modern audience (me).
